Memphis flights to, from East Coast canceled due to wintry weather

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - All Memphis flights to and from the LaGuardia (LGA) and Newark (EWR) airports are canceled Monday due to the wintry weather that is moving toward the east coast.

According to Associated Press, more than 5,000 flights in and out of east coast airports were canceled as a major snowstorm packing up to three feet of snow barrels down on the region.

Hans Crause flew from Memphis to Florida on Monday afternoon, but he has family in Rhode Island. His family is trapped inside because of the big storm.

"I expect them to be locked up for a couple of days," Crause said.

WMC Action News 5 Managing Meteorologist Ron Childers says the real threat for airline travelers in this storm is snow rather than ice.

"The moment you clear a street, it's covered again, and that goes for runways as well," Childers said.

Remember to check with your airline prior to traveling, as it will have the most up to date scheduling information.
