Surveillance video captures speeding car prior to hitting 2 11-year-old boys

Surveillance video captures Raleigh crash victims' final moments

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Chilling surveillance video captured the final moments of the two 11-year-old boys killed when police say an unlicensed driver swerved onto the sidewalk on which they were walking.

In the video, Darryl Howard and Joshua McDowell can been seen playing tag as they ran to the store. Seconds later, an out-of-control car, being driven on the wrong side of the road at excessive speeds, is seen on the surveillance footage.

"She was on the left side, going about 85 to 90 miles per hour and killed those poor little babies, and I don't like that," said neighbor Ruby Jackson.

The accident happened Saturday on Jones Road near Raleigh Millington Road, where the speed limit is 30 miles per hour.

"We weren't expecting any of this to happen. It was very awful for her to be driving that fast," said Joshua's aunt, Cynthia Taylor.

Neighbors hope the video will prompt change. "I really would like to see some speed bumps or something like that. This is a very, very busy street," said Isadore Harris, who is a friend of Darryl Howard's family.

Sparkel Hastings, 26, remains behind bars after police say she lost control of her SUV, hitting and killing the two boys. She's facing several charges including two counts of vehicular homicide.

WMC Action News 5's Jerry Askin went by her listed address on Friday, where someone at the home said they are sorry about what happened. When asked to give a reaction to the accident, the man said, "I'm just like everyone else is." When asked whether he is Hastings' father, he slammed the door. "She's taken something from us, but we're going to be okay," added Taylor.

As both families try to make sense of the loss of two precious lives, they continue to grieve.

Funeral services have been planned for the two boys. Joshua McDowell will be laid to rest Saturday, January 31 at Christian Fellowship Church, located at 1189 East Trigg Avenue. People in need of a ride to Joshua's funeral can meet at Coleman Elementary School at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. School buses will be there to provide rides.

Family and friends will remember Darryl Howard on Saturday, Feb. 7.
