MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The search continues for the person who shot a pregnant woman.
The victim was rushed to Regional One in critical condition minutes after neighbors heard nearly a dozen shots. She has at least one other son, who arrived home from school to a crime scene.
It happened at 873 Pope Street, between Summer and Jackson Avenues, where a barrage of bullets shattered the security door of the home. Neighbors watched as officers swarmed the scene and questioned at least one man, although they say the shooting suspect or suspects got away.
"Whatever was going on, I know there were some gunshots, know they took a lady away," said Rita Bell Williams, who has lived on the block for 16 years. "Everybody's got problems in their neighborhood — we just happen to have more than somebody else, you know?"
Friday's shooting happened directly across the street from the old MPD "Community Oriented Policing" substation, which first opened during the Herenton Administration, and closed in 2005.
Police say the suspect or suspects may have left the scene in a black Nissan. They're still investigating a possible motive for the shooting.
