MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Robbery plagues someone in Memphis on average eight times a day. Learning what to do if you are approached by a robber could be the difference between life and death.
Private investigator and self defense expert Marti Miller says there are things you can do to stay safe and survive a vicious robbery.
"They are already at the point where they have the money," Miller said. "Give them the money."
Miller said the first rule of thumb is to verbally agree to give the robber your money or possessions. But when you give them your money, don't hand it to them. Instead throw it over their head.
"He has to go that way now, while he is going to get it. You can be halfway down the block," Miller said.
Even that simple move will force the robber to turn their back, giving you time to run.
The next rule is to not let a robber force you into a car.
"Once you're inside of that car, you belong to that person," Miller said.
If the robber goes after you, instead of your money, do what you can to keep them from taking you to another location.
Miller said one viable option is to kick the robber in the knee. She says six pounds of pressure will break your knee cap.
A few other tips to keep in mind to help you from becoming a victim: Don't sit in your car for long periods of time, park in well-lit areas, be aware of your surroundings.
