MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Sparkel Hastings' father nearly went to jail for trying to support his daughter, who was in court for vehicular homicide.
Hastings, 26, went before a judge Feb. 2 for a bond hearing with her attorney. She is facing charges stemming from a car crash that killed two 11-year-old boys in January.
Michael Stephens, Hastings' father, was briefly taken into custody for trying to talk to Hastings while she was behind the bench. He was later released after explaining his actions to the judge.
Stephens disputes reports that his daughter was fighting with a woman in her car when the crashed happened.
"I heard the girl was going into labor and contractions, and she grabbed the steering wheel which caused her [Hastings] to have the accident," said Stephens.
Hastings attorney, Scott Hall, said he has records showing that Hastings' passenger was admitted to a hospital for labor complications that day. Since the incident, Stephens said that his daughter's life has been turned upside down.
"It's hurting her every day to think about those kids, because you know, she's just a kid herself," he said.
Stephens said he prays for the families of the boys every day.
"I hope to God they can forgive her for what she did, and I know it's going to be hard because I hurt for those children," said Stephens, who added that Hastings planned to get married on Valentine's Day.
Hastings' hearing was reset for Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015. She remains in jail on a $350,000 bond.
