MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Could drones soon be buzzing over City of Memphis? A drone expert met with city leaders on Tuesday to show engineers how drones could keep you safe on area bridges and roads. But at what price?
Some people think drones are an invasion of privacy. But, drone expert Robert Estes says governments can't afford to live without the technology that drones provide to keep you out of danger.
Estes says drones are priceless, especially when it comes to inspecting infrastructure.
"You can capture all of it in high definition, 360 degrees," he told city leaders, explaining how drones could help with bridge inspections and traffic surveys. "Cracks, rust, bolts, work loose. Just looking at the infrastructure ... There's always the risk with a human being up under a bridge. When you use drones, there's no risk."
Governments across the world ask Estes to show them how drones work. He says fire departments and law enforcement inquiries are growing.
"If you had a missing family member or a missing child, you would definitely want something such as this looking," he explained. "You can catch fugitives with them and the list goes on and on and on."
City leaders say Tuesday's meeting was simply an internal meeting held for Estes to show them what can be done. There are no contracts or agreements in place.
