MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Emotional and tearful, John Utley said he wanted to do the right thing.
From his attorney's office he confessed to WMC Action News 5 to trashing and stealing items from Big League Movers.
"I don't know what got over me. I really want to make up for it," Utley said.
Utley said it happened when he went to a concert at Minglewood Hall on Friday night.
He said he had been drinking all day and night and wandered into the offices of Big League Movers when he was looking for a bathroom.
"I destroyed the company and took stuff. A lot of stuff actually, and then left with some of the stuff," Utley admitted.
Video surveillance shows Utley walking out of the building with a large TV.
Utley said he spent a couple of hours in Big League Movers' office. "Towards the end of me being there, I got angry," Utley recalled. "A lot of stuff that's built up. It just kind of got out."
Alcohol for a charity Super Bowl party at the company was taken along with laptops, tablets, artwork and a picture signed by Mike Conley.
Utley said he realized what he had done the next day and eventually contacted the owner of the company.
"I was sincerely sorry for what happened," said Utley. "I had never done anything like this before. I was scared."
Despite the apology and return of the stolen items, the owner of the company still wanted to get police involved.
"My parents raised me better," Utley added. "I know it was wrong. I've been trying to make up for it."
Utley plans to turn himself in to police Wednesday.
