MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Sex-trafficking is a growing problem in the Mid-South and now there's a new indictment against a Memphis woman.
Sara Higgins, 33, currently sits in a cell at Jail East, which is within walking distance of Macon Cove area motels where police say she pimped a 14-year-old girl.
"Don't really surprise me, but it's ridiculous," said Eva Smith.
Smith helps troubled women through the non-profit CAAP Incorporated.
"I've been sober for 15 years off of crack cocaine," said Smith. "And know how it is out there."
According to court records, the young teen was paid $40 on at least one occasion by a man she met for sex inside a motel. An affidavit from Higgins' initial arrest states the alleged victim gave a written and signed statement that Higgins recruited her to work as a prostitute.
"We mothers, we need to pay attention to our daughters," said Smith. "We really, really do."
Smith said she's fortunate her four daughters turned out alright, despite her own difficulties.
"I have one left in school, fixing to graduate from Central with honor, and I thank God for that," said Smith.
