MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A Shelby County jury convicted a man of stealing from a couple who was in town for the St. Jude Marathon in 2011.
The victim, Darin Pettit, said, "I'm glad he was found guilty of what he did."
Anmichael Leonard, who has eight prior felonies, was convicted of theft of property and fraudulent use of a credit card.
Pettit was running the marathon for an 11-year-old old St. Jude patient who died a month before the race. He used the GPS tracking on the phone Leonard stole to track him.
Pettit and his family were staying at the Doubletree Hotel downtown when they left their room unattended for 15 minutes.
When they returned, they found several items missing: two cell phones, a phone charger, an iPod, a purse, a wallet, a credit card, a pair of jeans and prescription medications.
Pettit came to Memphis to testify against Leonard.
"We wanted to come down and testify and have our voices heard in hopes the jury would make what we felt was the right decision and we certainly feel they did," said Pettit.
Leonard faces up to 24 years behind bars.
