MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - From a hospital room, a Memphis family is sharing their story with WMC Action News 5.
Friday, the family lost everything when their house caught fire on Whittier Road. Inside the house a mother, her boyfriend, and three children scrambled to escape.
"I saw the smoke coming out of the living room, and I heard where the screaming was coming from," Timothy Bolden said. "It was coming from the kids' room."
Bolden and Brianna Letney were not the only ones to barely make it out. Jennifer Letney and two of her other children made it out just before the fire got to them.
Letney got emotional when talking about what Bolden means to her and her family.
"He's everything to me, and my kids are everything to me," Letney said. "We just lost everything we own, and I could have lost my kid."
Bolden and Brianna are both dealing with severe burns. Brianna has burns to 85 percent of her body. She's getting treatment from a specialist in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Despite people calling Bolden a hero for running through the fire and pulling Brianna to safety, he says she's the real hero.
"She actually saved my life, because I was still asleep," Bolden said. "Hearing her screaming like she did, as if something was happening, made me just jump up and get aware."
Letney tells us Brianna underwent surgery Monday. Doctors say the procedure went well. Both she and Bolden have a long road of recovery ahead of them.
Memphis Fire Department says it is still working to figure out the cause of the fire.
