MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - What started with a plea ended with a family friend answering Bartlett hairstylist Steven Cotton's call.
"He's the only father figure I ever had, and so it means a lot for me to see him back on his health," said 22-year-old Fernando Torres-Parada.
Torres-Parada is giving Cotton one of his kidneys more than 10 years after the two first met as neighbors.
"I'm forever indebted to him for doing this for me," said Cotton. "I can't believe that he would do that for me."
The donor, a new father himself, was willing to sacrifice his job as a forklift operator for his friend.
"The recovery is six to eight weeks, and they told me they couldn't hold my position for that long, you know," explained Torres-Parada.
WMC Action News 5's Jason Miles contacted the temporary agency for whom Torres-Parada works, and the agency later informed the donor that previously stated employment plans would change, due to his surgery.
"Telling me that they want to give me top dollar," recalled Torres-Parada. "They want to give me some work benefit package that I never heard of, don't know existed."
Meanwhile, Cotton is preparing for his upcoming operation.
"I'm really not nervous about the surgery," he commented.
Now, there is added peace of mind for both men whose bond will soon grow even stronger.
Torres-Parada commented, "I feel real comfortable knowing that he'll still be alive and healthy and I can see him the way I used to see him."
