Memphis Open Day 3: Nishikori survives and Americans thrive
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -
Top seed and world rank #5 Kei Nishikori got all he could handle with 165th ranked American Ryan Harrison. Harrison, a qualifier, beat Nishikori handily in the first set and tried to rally back after trailing 4-0 in the second set. Nishikori ended pulling out the win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In the quarterfinals, Nishikori will face another American qualifier, this time Austin Krajicek. Krajicek is ranked 156th. The 24-year-old American gets into the quarters after a huge upset over 5th seed and world rank #25 Ivo Karlovic, last year's finalist. Krajicek beat Karlovic in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
In the other quarterfinal, it's all-American as John Isner beat Croatian Ivan Dodig 6-4, 7-6. Isner is the third seed and #18 player in the world. He'll face Sam Querrey, who beat 18-year-old Jared Donaldson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Tomorrow's schedule includes early matches from Americans Donald Young and qualifier Denis Kudla and fourth seeded Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov vs. Australian Bernard Tomic. Young knocked out eighth seeded Frenchman Adrian Mannarino to get into the second round.
