MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MS (WMC) - Mississippi County prosecutors dropped their case against Christopher Sowell who was 17 when he confessed to the murder of his 11-year-old neighbor, Jessica Williams.
Her father, Eric Williams, said, "I can't believe it."
Williams said he found out when his mother called him at work. Prosecutors pointed out in a court filing that Sowell's DNA was not found on the sixth grader's body, and said more investigating is needed.
Jessica's body was discovered face-down in a ditch in August 2013, about five miles from her home in Gosnell. Her puppy was near the 11-year-old's body.
The following January, DNA showed Williams' neighbor, Freddie Sharp III , was the rapist; he was tried and convicted.
"My husband is innocent. He didn't do anything. It's very hard on me and his three kids. So I'm left alone to try to do everything while everybody hates him," said Sharp's wife.
Sharp is appealing his conviction, and prosecutors reserved the right to prosecute Sowell within a year.
