Former babysitter indicted on child rape charges

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A 20-year-old man was indicted on child rape charges for crimes investigators say he committed as a babysitter when he was 17.

Investigators say Deangelo Norton raped a 7-year-old boy he was babysitting more than once in August 2012. He is also accused of trying to have sex with another 7-year-old boy at the same address in October 2013.

Neighbors on Clementine Road, where investigators say the rapes happened, are outraged.

"I went to school with him and I never knew that he would do that," Kiara Moore said. "For me to have two and staying over here, I've got to be cautious."

WMC Action News 5's Jerry Askin spoke with Norton's father about the accusations.

"We just want to find out what happened," said Warren Norton reacting to his son's indictment.

Warren said there is more to the story and his son would never do such a thing.

"I'm upset. I'm f------ upset," he said. "My son loves kids, he has children. He's a family man. He didn't do nothing like this and we're going to take care of this in court."

Norton was indicted on charges of rape of a child and attempted rape of a child. If convicted, he could face 25 years in prison without the possibility of parole for the child rape charge and eight to 12 years in prison without parole for the attempted rape charge.

Norton is free on bond.
