MLGW suspects leaking tanker caused gas smell odor

MLGW suspects leaking tanker caused gas smell odor

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis Light, Gas, and Water received complaints from across Shelby County of a gas smell on Friday morning. MLGW believes the odor is mercaptan, which is an additive that gives natural gas its smell.

MLGW suspects a tanker truck carrying the additive may have been leaking as it passed through the area. People reported the smell of gas in the Shelby Drive area, Downtown Memphis around the Pyramid, and in Germantown.

Neighboring counties also had reports of an odor.

Crews did not find leaks at any of MLGW's Gas Gate Stations or anywhere in its system.

If you suspect a gas leak, call 901-528-4465.
