ALCORN COUNTY, MS (WMC) - Two people were killed and one was injured when they were hit by a tractor-trailer on Highway 72 near the Alcorn and Tishomingo county lines.
According to Mississippi Highway Patrol, a good Samaritan stopped to help others involved in a minor car accident when the tractor-trailer lost control on the ice and jack-knifed, hitting the people waiting outside of their cars.
Drivers in Alcorn County are using extreme caution after a day full of wrecks and collisions. Officials say icy roads are responsible for most of these accidents.
"I heard of about seven wrecks today and a couple people got killed," said driver Jason Span.
In addition to the two people who died, a 9-year-old boy was sent to the hospital after the crash in Alcorn County. He is recovering.
"It's pretty slick out there," said Span, who lives nearby and says the roads were extremely slick. "I almost slid off the road."
He says there are only two things you can do in these dangerous driving conditions.
"Stay off the roads and if you have to go anywhere, drive extremely slow," said Span.
Mississippi Highway Patrol is still investigating the deadly accident.
