MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Inclement weather made Friday a dangerous day to be on the roads. Sleet and freezing rain made for poor conditions.
One nasty wreck occurred near the intersection of Raines Road and 3rd Street in Southwest Memphis. A tractor-trailer and a van crashed into each other, trapping the driver of the van and two children inside.
"He (truck driver) just texted me and said that he was in a very bad accident and it didn't look good," said the truck driver's girlfriend, Velvety Simmons. "I can only think that the weather took a toll on the whole thing."
The driver of the van was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The two children are recovering.
Several other accidents happened throughout the day.
An SUV was towed away on I-240 near Lamar avenue. Another accident involving a white pickup truck delayed traffic on I-240 near Getwell Road. Icy roads also may have been a factor in a single-car crash on 385 near Houston Levee Road.
"We saw, like, a MATA bus pulled over, a car had spun out in front of it," recalled resident Dwana Jones.
Memphis Police Department closed roads that appeared to be too slick for drivers.
"I'm very tired of it," added Jones. "I hate cold weather, so, I'm very tired of it."
Jones' sister, Chriss, refused to drive on the icy roads on Friday.
"I've seen quite a few cars that have already spun out," she said. "She [her sister] slid down the driveway. People just sliding everywhere. I'm just trying to get back to the house."
While the worst of it is behind us, many people say they are staying inside this weekend -- or at least until the roads clear up.
"I don't trust the drivers," said Willie Cobb. "I'm a pretty good driver, but I don't trust the rest of it."
