MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis sophomore forward Austin Nichols won his first American Athletic Conference Player of the Week Award this week. Nichols has made the conference honor roll four times this season.
After missing two games with an ankle injury, Nichols returned with a fury against UConn at home. The 6-foot-8 forward helped the Tigers survive a late run from the Huskies and pull out a 75-72 win at home. Nichols started the game shooting 6-8 and finished with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 7 blocks.
In Sunday's 75-65 overtime win over UCF, Nichols added 20 points, 7 rebounds and three blocks. Nichols averaged 18 PPG, 7.5 RPG and 5 BPG during the week.
The Collierville native is averaging 13.7 points per game, 6.2 rebounds per game and 3.5 blocks per game. His blocks averaging ranks him second in the country, and is third in overall blocks.
