LAKELAND, TN (WMC) - For the second time in as many days, a person committed a public act of suicide in Lakeland.
Chopper 5 was over the scene where Shelby County sheriff's deputies were investigating a car in Beverle Rivera Park on Tuesday night.
A SCSO spokesperson said deputies saw a car sitting in the park and went over to check it out. They told the man inside to get out of the car, but when he did, he put a gun to his head and shot himself.
Lakeland resident Sherry Glatzer is especially shocked because she drove past the suicide of a 16-year-old Arlington High School student who jumped off of Davis Plantation bridge Monday, impacting traffic for hundreds of commuters.
"I was taking my daughter to volleyball," recalled Glatzer. "I saw two cars pulled over on the side of the street. I looked over and saw a dead body."
"This kind of stuff just doesn't happen in Lakeland," Glatzer added. "It's kind of freaky."
Investigators have not released many details about the situation in the park.
