OXFORD, MS (WMC) - An Ole Miss student died after a sledding accident on Wednesday night in Oxford, Mississippi.
Oxford Police Department responded to reports that a young man slid into a street sign in the Highland Square neighborhood.
Cell phone video captured the moments before Fenton Kottkamp was thrown from a kayak he was riding on during the accident. Marks show several tracks down the steep hill, and video shows several students watching and two riding in the kayak.
However, police say Kottkamp was alone when he slammed into a street sign.
Colin Sullivan's fraternity house, which sits next the Phi Psi house where Kottkamp was a senior member, is decked out in black bows. Every house dons the ribbons for the senior accounting major.
"I was shocked, you know, it could have been me, it could have been anyone, I mean I was sledding the other day too and you know, I'm just really sad," said Sullivan.
Kottkamp is from Kentucky and leaves behind two brothers and his parents. Ole Miss students and the Oxford community are stunned that an otherwise scenic snow day came to a deadly end.
Sullivan added, "It could have been my best friend, it could have been me, just again thoughts and prayers for the family."
According to kidshealth.org, more than half of sledding injuries are head injuries.
