Accused Wolfchase purse snatcher in police custody

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - An accused Wolfchase Galleria purse snatcher is behind bars Thursday night after being on the run for nearly two months.

Eighteen-year-old Lhaywood Nichols is accused of robbing a woman at gunpoint outside the Wolfchase Galleria JCPenney store.

"It's absolutely terrifying to know that someone would just walk up to someone and try to take their own personal belongings," said Carmen Thomas.

Police say Andrea Davis was getting into her car when Nichols walked behind her and attempted to take her purse.

According to the affidavit, the victim says she tried to pull her purse from the suspects and that's when he said "Give me your purse," and put a gun to her face.

From there, investigators say Nichols took Davis' purse and ran off to a nearby getaway car. The incident happened in December during the busy Christmas season. Police arrested Nichols on Tuesday. The news has some shoppers thinking twice about their safety outside the mall.

Marquesa Butler shops at Wolfchase about once a month, and says she's taking precautions.

"I just watch my surroundings and make sure if it's nighttime, or if I'm going to a place like that, I don't go alone," said Butler.

Police say the stolen purse has since been returned to the victim.
