MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Road construction has several lanes shut down around the Interstate 40/240 flyover.

The closings are causing headaches for some drivers, but TDOT says it's going to be worth the wait.

More construction is closing lanes on interstate 40 and 240 between exit 18 and 16, and traffic is bottlenecking because of lane closures. TDOT officials also set detours along the I-40 Westbound ramp to Little Rock.

TDOT Spokeswoman Nichole Lawrence says the latest ramp closures and detours will be in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday. Construction will continue in phases until 2017.

"So that we can install the bridge beams that go on that new westbound flyover that we are building that I-40/240 interchange project," said Lawrence.

But when it's complete, the interchange will be an impressive and efficient 75-foot high, four level interchange.

"Well, in the overall project we are widening Sam Cooper from two lanes to three and we are building a new eastbound and westbound to help maneuver traffic," Lawrence added.

Lawrence says the current weekend construction work was supposed to take place the previous week, but snow and ice forced crews into delay. Lawrence advises drivers to use Highway 385 and other alternate routes.

Meanwhile, drivers like Janice Drake say they've already come up with their own special way of getting around.

"Summer is like bumper to bumper and it's heavy traffic, but if you know well enough to go down Park and Covington Pike, hit Raleigh LaGrange," said Drake.
