MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -
The last time the Memphis Tigers were on the field as a team, it was in sunny Florida at the Miami Beach Bowl.
Spring practice getting underway this weekend, and the conditions were nothing like the name 'spring practice' would indicate.
Cold and rainy for the first of 15 practices the Tigers will go through in the next month or so.
Memphis is coming off a banner year, but looking to replace 20 seniors lost from last year's AAC Championship team.
Defense took the biggest hit, with eight starters gone, but the team as a whole needing to get a look at the many mid-season transfers and redshirts it'll be working with in the coming season.
Coach Justin Fuente knows his squad has a lot of work ahead of them. 'Our execution level is not where it needs to be yet on either side of the ball, long way to go there,' says Fuente. 'But, with effort and energy like that it's cause for optimism for the next day.'
Quarterback Paxton Lynch adds, 'Feels good to come out here and working together, we've been working hard in the weight room and conditioning since we got back, but it feels to get out there as a team and work with the offensive guys and all the defensive guys and go against each other so you can feel guys out so you know how to talk to them as well.'
The Tigers have 14 more practices to go before the Spring game set for April 10.
