MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A Memphis police officer is accused of touching himself while giving a 14-year-old girl a ride to school in early February.

Officer Derrick Abdul-Wakil, 43, is charged with solicitation and sexual exploitation of a minor for the incident that investigators say happened on Feb. 5.

He left court Monday refusing to comment on the charges against him.

According to the affidavit of complaint, the teenager was walking to school in the area of Walker Avenue and Neptune Street when a uniformed police officer pulled up in his squad car. The teenager said the officer asked her if she wanted a ride to school because it was cold outside. She agreed and got into the front seat of the car. The 14-year-old reported that the officer had a jacket over his lap, and it appeared he was masturbating underneath the jacket. The officer is also accused of touching her face, cheek, and outer thigh. When the officer dropped the teen off at school, she called police.

The teenager's ride with the police officer was caught on a nearby business's surveillance camera. The officer was then identified as Derrick Abdul-Wakil, who admitted to giving the girl a ride and having a jacket over his lap, but he denies touching himself.

According to MPD, Abdul-Wakil is assigned to the DUI Unit and is currently on non-enforcement.

He has been employed by Memphis Police Department since June 1995.

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong released a statement to WMC Action News 5 saying "We will continue to do what I have always said we will do. We will take all criminal allegations seriously. Being a police officer will not exempt you from following the same laws that we require our citizens to follow."
