MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - IKEA officials confirmed the possibility of opening a location in Nashville, but will this lessen the impact of Memphis' location once both are built?

The IKEA in Memphis, set to open in the Fall of 2016, is expected to be built on property off of Germantown Parkway. IKEA officials may also be looking for land in Nashville to build a potential location.

Customers are known to travel far and wide across regions to spend their money at IKEA and that is money Shelby County officials were hoping would be spent here.

"Good bargains, nice quality furniture," says shopper Ella Baker.

Right now, Nashville residents are forced to drive 250 miles to Atlanta if they want to shop at IKEA. The Memphis location, once it is built, would be the closest IKEA to Nashville at roughly 200 miles away. Another store is planned for St. Louis, which would be a 315 mile trip.

"I think IKEA will be a good idea here, and it will probably be better here in Memphis," says Shopper Ronnie Booker.

City officials don't seem to think a possible location in Nashville will change the impact of the destination store here in Memphis.

The Mayor's Office released this statement that reads in part, "If at some point in the future IKEA decides to open a store in Nashville, it will be far enough away that there should be no impact."
