More winter weather headed our way

Our next winter system is headed toward the Mid-South Our next winter system is headed toward the Mid-South

Our next round of winter weather is just hours away.  A potent cold front will usher bitterly cold arctic air into the Mid-South through the day Wednesday into Wednesday night and Thursday.  An abundance of Gulf moisture in advance of the front and overriding moisture behind the cold front will allow rain to change to freezing rain, sleet, and snow late Wednesday into Thursday morning.

Wednesday will begin with rain and temperatures in the forties and fifties.  As temperatures fall through the day Wednesday, precipitation will make the transition to winter weather from northwest to southeast.  Significant accumulations of ice and snow are likely across much of the Mid-South.  In the Memphis metro area as much as half an inch to an inch of sleet is expected followed by one to two inches of snow on top of that.  Temperatures Wednesday night will fall into the upper teens to near twenty and afternoon highs on Thursday will struggle to reach the upper twenties to near thirty.  And to a more misery, we can expect strong gusty north winds beginning Wednesday night through the day Thursday.

A WINTER STORM WARNING will go into effect for the entire WMC Action News 5 coverage area Wednesday and remain in place through midday Thursday.  We do anticipate travel to be a problem Wednesday night well into Thursday.  Now is the time to make preparations for our next round of weather.  Stay tuned to WMC Action News 5 on the web and on the air for further updates on this next winter system and be sure to download the WMC Action News 5 Storm Tracker app.  It's free for your iPhone, iPad, and Android system.
