Mississippi man charged with child molestation

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - The city of Hernando's animal control officer has been charged with one count of child molestation, officials say.

DeSoto County Sheriff's Department Commander David Mitchell says Leonard West, 54, is accused in an alleged incident that occurred Tuesday at a private residence.

Mitchell says West was arrested and booked at the DeSoto County Jail but transported to the Marshall County Jail.

He said West, a former DeSoto County Sheriff's deputy, was transferred because he was a Hernando city employee and former sheriff's deputy.

Mitchell said both the Hernando Police Department and the Sheriff's Department wanted to avoid any appearance that West would be granted preferential treatment.

Mitchell said West remained at the Marshall County Jail late Wednesday, and had not yet posted his $65,000 bond.

Further details were not released.
