CLARKSDALE, MS (WMC) -

Lawrence Reed, the man accused of killing Marco McMillian, appeared in court Tuesday.

Reed is accused of choking the openly gay mayoral candidate with the chain on his wallet and trying to burn his body to cover it up.

Investigators testified that Reed admitted to the crime. Reed claims McMillian invited him to a party but drove him to a dark, deserted road instead. The two men drank and smoked marijuana.

Reed told detectives he felt uncomfortable after he saw McMillian touching himself to porn on his cell phone and asking him about his sexual preference.

Reed's girlfriend testified that Reed called her after McMillian's death and claimed it was self defense. She says Reed told her, "It was either him or me."

"My son had a legal right to stand his ground and defend himself from this monstrous individual," said Reed's mother. "If he had not then he might not have lived to tell about it."

Investigators say Reed told them he thought McMillian was still alive after choking him and admitted to holding his face down in standing water.

Prosecutors say Reed dumped the body by the levee and took McMillian's car to his girlfriend's house.

Reed later crashed McMillian's car, and that incident sparked the murder investigation.
