MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

MLGW crews restored power to Downtown Memphis after cutting it off in response to smoke coming from a manhole near The Westin Memphis Beale Street Hotel.

Around 9 a.m., power started going out at downtown homes and businesses.

"We had about 1,800 residential and commercial that were impacted by the outage," said MLGW representative Gale Jones Carson.

At the Peabody Hotel, generators provided some light, but the lobby was almost entirely in the dark and the elevators weren't working. An army of hotel workers broke out their flashlights and did their best to keep everyone safe and comfortable.

Even a power outage wasn't enough to stop the famous ducks from completing their daily march through the lobby.

"The show must go on absolutely!" said Peabody Duckmaster Anthony Petrina. "No matter what, whether the power be out, whether it be snowing on the roof top, the Peabody ducks march every single day at 11 in the morning at 5 in the afternoon."

The lights were also out in front of the Orpheum, where dancers in town for auditions at a national dance contest showed off the moves they were hoping to show the judges.

About three hours after the lights cut out, MLGW finished repairs and power was restored.

One Peabody guest said she would never forget this day.

"It's interesting," said Kristin Jackson, who is visiting Memphis from Hawaii. "It added a whole other dimension to the day."
