Woman accused of embezzling money from Lafayette County DA's office

OXFORD, MS (WMC) -

A woman was arrested after a year-long investigation into missing money at Lafayette County District Attorney's Office.

Heather Thomas Peters, 45, of Oxford, is charged with embezzling public funds after $1,800 went missing from the DA's Bad Check Unit, which she managed.

"She is also accused of charging another $2,000 on a WalMart credit card belonging to the DA's office," said Mississippi State Auditor Stacey Pickering.

Peters was issued an $8,002.97 civil demand to cover the amount of money she is accused of taking, as well as the cost of the investigation.
