MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Several students at A. Maceo Middle School complained about breathing problems on Wednesday after pepper spray was used to break up a fight.

The school's resource officer used pepper spray to break up the fight at lunchtime.

Joshua Franklin, a seventh grader, says the fight broke out between two groups of girls and grew as more people noticed it happening.

"I saw some girls fighting. I didn't see the pepper spray being sprayed, but then everyone started coughing. That's when I knew something had happened," he said. "The pepper spray went almost all through the hallway. Some girl had passed out in the hallway."

An ambulance was called and the girl was treated at the scene. MPD says officers have been called to the school 27 times since August 2014. Two of those calls were transferred to the fire department, but the majority was due to fights or other disturbances.

"It's scary. Really scary," said Joshua's dad, Joe. "And this is supposed to be a good school and I've got my son going here to get a good education and you come and hear something about pepper spray being sprayed in the cafeteria."

Police say two students were detained after the fight. It is unclear whether they will face charges.
