MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The neighborhood at Legends Park looks idyllic, but the peaceful-looking setting was destroyed just before 7 p.m. Thursday when someone shot a man who was getting out of his car.

"I just heard the gun shot and I took off running, me and some people. We saw police, about 12 of them, came past us," said Clifton Boles.

Police say a man was shot during a robbery outside his car. An ambulance took him to the Regional Medical Center.

"As I heard the bang I seen the guy in the street crawling in the street," said Daterrius Hayes. "I came out the front door to see if he's ok because I heard the shot. He said he had been shot."

The man's hat and shoe were left in the street surrounded by evidence markers. People who live in the area say the man is a resident of the Legends Park Senior Living Center. He was shot next to the living center.

Legends Park is on the land where the Dixie Homes Public Housing Complex used to sit. Residents say it is a No Gang Safety Zone, a designation designed to keep gangs out, and they haven't seen any problems.

Police say the victim is in non-critical condition. The suspect, a male, may be driving a two-door Nissan Altima.
