Before ground was broken on the new Tanger Outlets coming to Southaven, those behind it announced a few of the stores that will come along with it.

The announcements came complete with runway models, donning branded outfits. The outlet will eventually bring more than 70 shops before Black Friday.

"I've been talking to my friends and everybody's so excited to have an outlet mall so close," said Chandra Murphy. "The benefit of coming down here, definitely, is the discounts and great stores like Banana Republic and J.Crew and all those that you love but able to get at a good rate."

The partial list of stores coming was revealed by Tanger Outlets. It includes Gap Outlet, Banana Republic Factory Store, White House | Black Market, Columbia, Ann Taylor Factory Store, J. Crew Factory, Under Armour, Chico's Outlet, LOFT Outlet, KAY Jewelers Outlet, Guess Factory Store, Skechers, and Pandora.

Gay Darnell is excited about the shops that are coming.

"These are the shops we get to go to when we're on vacation, rather than right up the road," she said.

"I don't think my husband is going to be too happy about this all, but we're excited for sure," Murphy added.

Tanger Outlets brings jobs

Tanger Outlets should bring about 1,500 new jobs to the area.

"Phase one of the project is also going to bring 3 restaurants and a hotel, so I think it's safe to say you're bringing between 1,000 and 1,500 jobs for the city," said Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite.

Big discounts at popular brand name stores have shoppers giddy, but Tanger Outlets President and CEO Steve Tanger says those dollars spent will do even more for the Mid-South job market.

"They've got an educated, dedicated workforce looking to work, not afraid of hard work," he said.

"Just for the 70 mall stores, we estimate an additional $3 million a year in sales tax revenue," Musselwhite said.

Tourism leaders say it will mean big bucks regardless of whether you live in Mississippi or Tennessee.

"The visitor doesn't see a state line when you cross Highway 61 or Interstate 55," said Kevin Kane, Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The retail destination aims to entice visitors who are already checking out Memphis, Graceland, Bass Pro Shops, and The Mississippi Blues Trail.

"Every store's got a different strategy, but as an overall statement, products are the same fit, the same quality, and 30 to 50 percent off regular retail," Tanger added.

A spokesperson with Tanger Outlets says the company typically starts hiring three months prior to opening. With a November target, applications are expected to be available late this summer.
