TATE COUNTY, MS (WMC) -

Mississippi investigators from DeSoto County to Panola County are searching for a paroled killer.

"It's a little scary knowing he is on foot and not knowing where he went and where he is now," said Rhonda Melton, who lives near the crash site.

Investigators say a mangled guard rail marks the spot where 47-year-old James Michael Green II crashed after leading a Crenshaw police officer on a chase that spanned two counties.

According to Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance, police in Crenshaw chased Green after he failed to stop during a traffic stop.

The officer chased Green from Panola County into Tate County where he crashed into the guard rail near the intersection of Highways 3 and 4 near the Sarah community.

Deputies say Green then shot at the officer and ran off into the woods, scaring neighbors in the area.

"We heard about all this early this morning, and of course we only live about half, half a mile from the intersection where all this happened," said Melton. "You know, having kids and having kids in school right there in our backyard, you know we're just concerned."

Green was on parole after serving 20 years in Shelby County for arson and murder in 1986. A Corrections Department spokesperson said he has been out of jail since 2006. Green has been reporting to the state of Mississippi where he lives with his parents.

Deputies are on the lookout for Green in case he comes home.

Lance says Green is described as 5'10," 180 pounds, and was last seen wearing an orange T-shirt, shorts, and no shoes.

While some of Green's neighbors are shocked to hear he is accused of shooting at police, people living farther south in Tate County will be locking their doors and sleeping with one eye open until Green is caught.

Green is considered armed and dangerous, and investigators in at least four counties are looking for him. If you see him, call 911.
