Reports of fighting and gunfire forced Memphis police officers to escort people out of Tom Lee Park on Sunday night.

Memphis Police Department is now preparing to do even more to keep people safe as summer approaches.

Riverside Drive was closed for about 30 minutes around 7 p.m. on Sunday as a result of the fight that was reported at the park.

"Honestly, I feel it's an issue throughout the city," said Memphian Leroy Blaine. "Being in the position to where we would have to close a public facility due to, what I feel like, is ignorance. It's the norm in Memphis."

"I think it's pretty uncalled for and unnecessary to fight," said Jasmine Peete. "It's not fair, especially everyone is just off work on Sundays, pretty much enjoying themselves. People should be coming out here just for those reasons."

MPD says it cleared the park in order to maintain safety for those in the area. Officers are still working to learn more about who was involved in the fight.

"I think it's terrible that a few people ruined it for other people," Sheryll Comans agreed.

As a result of what happened, extra patrols will be added in parks, especially when large events are scheduled and big crowds are expected. The parks will remain open at night unless it is deemed necessary to close.

If you have any information about the fight, call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
