MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Residents of a Whitehaven apartment complex lost everything in a fire Tuesday.

"By the time I got back everything was up in flames," said one resident.

Many watched from afar as flames and smoke rose from the Raines Court Apartments.

"I ran over here and by the time I got over here, things were in a blaze," said resident Ladarrius Matthews.

The fire destroyed much of the small Whitehaven complex and virtually everything Matthews owned.

"Trying to figure out something," said Matthews. "I had a bike and everything in there."

The American Red Cross arrived Tuesday night to assess the damage both inside and out.

"We communicate with the fire department to find out who the victims are and what their needs are and we reach out to the families after that," said Red Cross volunteer Mary Simmons.

According to fire investigators, the fire was intentionally set in two units. Regardless, they're thankful no person or pet got hurt.

"Cause I wasn't here at the time and my sister and nephew wasn't either," said one resident. "And my dog's okay."

A sign hanging on a complex wall advertised leasing specials. Now, the owner may be forced to rebuild.

MFD says 40 firefighters responded to the blaze.
