MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Many are calling one local man a hero after he dedicated his life to military service.

Robert Fulton also dedicated his life to church service and was a member at First Presbyterian Church in Memphis for many years.

"I didn't want his death to go unnoticed, especially in this time," said fellow church member Shannon Griffith.

Griffith grew up in the church and looked up to the Washington D.C. native even before he knew he was a Navy admiral and a World War II hero.

"He was on the USS Houston and when it was sunk in the Sun of Straight in WWII and spent three years as a prisoner of war," said Griffith.

After serving in WWII, Fulton rose to the position of rear admiral and took command of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.

Despite his many honors, Griffith says Fulton never stopped giving back to his church.

"He was the person I could go to for advice," Griffith recalled.

After a life of making a difference, Fulton passed away at the age of 104. He was the oldest graduate of the Naval Academy.

Griffith added, "My admiration for his character is unfathomable."
