MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Several Memphis families escaped when their Hickory Hill apartment building went up in flames early Wednesday morning. One woman was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.

Memphis firefighters were called to the fire in the 5900 block of East Point Drive at the Bella Vista Apartments around 3:30 a.m.

Fire crews are still on the scene making sure all the flames are out. Everyone was out of the apartments when firefighters arrived on the scene.

According to MFD Lt. Wayne Cooke, the fire began in a bottom-floor apartment and spread to six or eight apartments.

One of the apartments was home to Annie Hernandez, her mom, and four brothers and sisters.

"My mom went in the room screaming telling us to wake up," said Hernandez. "The only thing that went through my mind was just to get out of the apartment and be safe and forget everything else."

One women was taken to the hospital for a cut in her hand. A man was treated on the scene for inhaling too much smoke.

Cooke said the apartments did have a working smoke detector.

MFD says food left unattended on the stove caused the fire.
