Researchers with Gallup released their annual poll highlighting the top 50 U.S. cities for creating jobs.

The good news is that the Mid-South made the list, but Memphis' ranking is raising a few eyebrows.

According to the 2015 poll, Memphis and surrounding areas comes in at number 44. Memphis' 2014 ranking was number 26; that's an 18 spot drop.

Salt Lake City, Utah and Austin, Texas are the two cities topping this year's list.

According to Gallup, the poll is based on the number of companies hiring in each city compared to the number of employers letting go of workers.

This new study was released the same day Walmart broke ground on what will be a brand new supercenter in Horn Lake, MS, bringing nearly 500 jobs by 2016.

Add to that the 1,000 new jobs created by the new Tanger Outlet Center in Southaven. And IKEA will bring 175 jobs when it opens sometime in 2016.

The new Target Distribution Center on Davidson Road in Memphis is looking to hire more than 160 people. The opening of Bass Pro Shop created 600 new jobs in the middle of Downtown Memphis.

That adds up to more than 2,000 jobs, all created for Mid-Southerners within the last few months.

More companies will be hiring Thursday at the Mid-South Fairgrounds. WIN and the City of Memphis are holding a job fair starting at 10 a.m. Thursday. It is free and open to the public.
