Community remembers Mississippi woman killed answering door

CLARKSDALE, MS (WMC) -

On a night a when the city of Clarksdale is remembering one of its most beloved citizens, a man sits behind bars a person of interest in the murder of 65-year-old Myrtle Messenger.

The Thursday night vigil for the cherished wife, mother and grandmother filled an entire street. Sheriff's deputies and Clarksdale police blocked off the street in front of Messenger's home as hundreds of people gathered for a vigil to remember a woman who everyone seemed to love.

"The community from downtown, round yard brick yard, Riverton, the whole community the whole Clarksdale everyone knowledge and loved her," said Mae Derringer.

Family members sat in the front row, as people holding candles remembered Messenger.

"She was just really loved a good person smiled all the time and just would be there for whoever needed her," said Undra Hagan.

Myrtle Messenger answered her door around 11 p.m. Saturday, when she was shot and killed.

Messenger's son says it is a sad lesson.

"In this area it's not safe; even in your own home," said Michael Messenger. 

Messenger's husband of almost 50 years says the outpouring is overwhelming.

"Look like everybody she came in contact with she was trying to she was smiling and trying to make them feel better. I think that's why so many people cared about her," said George Messenger.

Myrtle Messenger's funeral will be Saturday. 

Though a person of interest is in custody for the crime, Clarksdale investigators are waiting on the results from evidence before charging anyone.
