JACKSON, TN (WMC) -

Jackson police confirmed two people, 53-year-old Virginia Dorris and 52-year-old David Laster, are dead after a shooting at a Jackson bank on Monday morning.

Police say this was a domestic violence incident, not a robbery.

Friends say Dorris, a teller at the bank, had a restraining order against Laster, and fellow employees have escorted him out of the bank before.

"This one time he was actually able to make it in through the door and make it up to the counter to her," said witness Kendall Cooper Thompson.

Jackson police officers, Madison County deputies, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol were called to the shooting at the Bank of Jackson, located on East University Parkway.

"I heard screaming and chaos galore," Thompson recalled. She was across the street at Sonic when bank employees came running over for help.

"The next thing I know, I see police swarming and guns drawn," Thompson added.

According to police, Laster came inside the bank, shot Dorris, then shot himself. Dorris died at the bank. Laster was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

School officials say that North Side High School was on lockdown after the incident.

Meanwhile, Thompson recognizes the gravitas of the event.

"You just never know what's gonna be around the next corner."
