A Better Mid-South: Sunshine Week

Editorial by WMC Action News 5 General Manager Tracey Rogers:

Hi I'm Tracey Rogers, Vice President and General Manager of WMC Action News 5.

Open government is good government.

This month, we marked the 10th annual Sunshine Week giving us access to public information and what it means for you and try our community.

Though created by journalists, Sunshine Week is about the public's right to know what its government is doing, and why.

Sunshine Week seeks to enlighten and empower you to play an active role in your government at all levels, and to give you access to information that makes your lives better and your communities stronger.

Some 300 exemptions to open government laws have been defeated in the legislative sessions, because of the increased public and legislative awareness that resulted from the Sunshine reports and commentary.

There is no reason for us to simply accept excessive and unwarranted government secrecy.

We know that transparency in government means nothing, if it is not respected, obeyed, and enforced.

Access to public information makes this A Better Mid-South and a better country.
