Don't put away the winter clothes just yet

A cold front will move through the Mid-South bringing rain and cooler temperatures A cold front will move through the Mid-South bringing rain and cooler temperatures

We're four days into spring and have enjoyed some great weather so far.  Sunshine and temperatures in the mid to upper seventies have been in place for the start of the week, and another relatively mild day is expected Wednesday, but a cold front will bring a temporary change to that pattern.

Sunshine and seventies will give way to clouds, rain, and temperatures in the fifties as the week comes to a close.  A low pressure system with a trailing cold front will move out of the the western Plains Wednesday and move through the Mid-South Wednesday night and Thursday.

Ahead of the front, clouds will increase but temperatures will still reach the mid to upper seventies Wednesday.

Despite the increase in clouds, the day should be dry for most of the Mid-South, making for another nice day.  Wednesday night and Thursday, periods of rain and much cooler temperatures are in the forecast.

Fortunately, severe weather does not seem to be an issue with this system as instability will be limited and most of the precipitation will be behind the front.

Rainfall for most areas will average a third to a quarter of an inch with higher amounts possible in some locations.

Temperatures will fall late Wednesday night into the upper fifties and will likely remain in the fifties through the day Thursday.  Rain will exit the Mid-South by late Thursday but colder air will continue to filter into the Mid-South.

Overnight lows Thursday night will dip into the thirties to near forty.

Fortunately, sunshine will return Friday but don't expect it to be accompanied by warmer temperatures.  Highs will likely only reach the low to mid fifties Friday with a breezy north wind.

The coldest air arrives Friday night dropping temperatures into the thirties!

There is also the possibility of widespread frost Friday night, so if you've done some early spring planting you'll want to be sure to take some precautions to protect your plants.  You'll also want to make sure you have some warm clothing for the period of time as temperatures are expected to only reach the upper forties to lower fifties Saturday, and another night of temperatures in the thirties for Saturday night.

Ah, spring in the Mid-South.  Coats and gloves to T-shirts and shorts and then back again.  The warm up has been nice, but now it's time to get ready for another brief cold snap.  Hopefully, you haven't packed the winter clothes away just yet.
