Shelby County Sheriff's deputies with the fugitive task force are going door to door to round up men and women with active domestic violence warrants.

As of March 25, there are 1,235 total active domestic violence warrants; 94 of those warrants are for felony charges.

Last year, SCSO issued more than 3,500 domestic violence warrants.

In 2015, officers issued 262 and 245 warrants in January and February, respectively.

"Domestic violence is very high in Shelby County, as well as throughout the United States," said Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Hilliard. "We have men, women, children. It doesn't matter any color or creed; domestic violence is very prevalent."

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is in the early process of applying for a grant for more domestic violence funding.

However, in order to break the cycle of abuse, deputies say more has to be done than just locking up individual abusers. Hilliard says children that witness domestic violence situations could have problems in the future.

"If a domestic violence situation did occur, they are seeing their mom hit on their dad or their dad hit on their mom, and it affects them in the future," Hilliard explained.

Hilliard says people who work with domestic violence rehabilitation centers play a huge roll in stopping this problem.

He added, "And possibly just people, parents teaching their children the right way."
