MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A seat on the Memphis City Council is opening up and a former board member hopes to get back into power.

Shea Flinn currently holds position 2 in Super District 9, but says he will not seek re-election. Stephanie Gatewood is stepping up to try and claim his seat.

Gatewood says since she left office, people around her have been encouraging her to run again.

"The timing was not right," said Gatewood. "This time it just seems like the perfect storm and I do believe that my community is ready for great leadership again.

According to the Commercial Appeal, Phillip Spinosa is also running for the seat. Candidates can pick up qualifying petitions beginning April 17, and have until July 17 to file them.

The election will take place October 8.
