Former deputy charged with assaulting jail detainee

TATE COUNTY, MS (WMC) -

A former Tate County sheriff's deputy is charged with assaulting a detainee at Tate County Jail.

Randy Doss, 62, was a deputy with Tate County Sheriff's Office until February 2, 2012. According to an indictment, Doss used a stungun against someone who was in custody at the jail. The stungun injured the detainee. The reported incident happened in January of the same year.

The indictment says that Doss violated the detainee's "right not to be deprived of liberty without due process of law." Doss is charged with abuse of power and authority.

If convicted, Doss faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.
