MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A woman in charge of caring for the elderly is now charged with robbing from one of her clients.

Brenda Lee Pettis, 38, is charged with swiping nearly $7,000 worth of jewelry from an elderly client on her first day on the job.

According to police, Pettis pawned the stolen loot the next day at a shop on Getwell Road.

Memphian Helen Fluharty is committed to caring for herself, despite growing older. She hates to hear stories about elderly people being conned by their caregivers.

"I think it's horrible," Fluharty commented.

Jonathan Prince, who has a father in his 90s, agrees with Fluharty.

"To hurt elderly people and children, that shows you have no morals and no values in life."

According to court records, Pettis worked for Senior Care Management Solutions.

"Nothing is more important to us than the safety and security of our clients," said the company's co-owner in a written statement. "We are currently working with the Memphis Police Department as they investigate the incident further."

Fluharty believes that, unfortunately, some caregivers fall through the cracks.

"They're supposed to be there to help and they don't," Fluharty added.

Pettis is being held on a $4,000 bond and is charged with two counts of theft of property $1,000 to $10,000. She's due in court on April 1.
