MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Riverside Drive will soon go back to being a four-lane road.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton announced the road expansion will be ready for traffic in June.

City leaders knocked the road down to two lanes in an experiment designed to allow more room for pedestrians and cyclists. The idea was that drivers would switch to alternate routes.

"Travel speeds were reduced inconsistently, and the number of crashes was up over the year prior," Mayor Wharton said.

During the year-long experiment, program leaders solicited public feedback while analyzing crash and traffic data.

They decided the program did not work and will now remove temporary barriers and reopen Riverside Drive to four lanes of traffic.
