MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A stretch of Carpenter Street in Binghampton is home to hundreds of kids every day after school, most of whom go to Cornerstone Prep. The children often flock to the Carpenter Street Art Garden or neighborhood park.

But Tuesday, shots in the area had the kids and residents shaken.

"First it was pow pow pow, then pow pow pow, pow and we had like 50 kids. Kids were running everywhere, it was a mess," said a neighbor whose identity we agreed to hide.

"Firecrackers, we heard over and over shots. I was just in shock," said a neighbor.

Both neighbors say they saw men running from Howze Park, shooting.

"It's dangerous because they could get hit with bullets. They don't care who out, they shoot. It don't matter who it is out," the neighbor explained.

Those in the neighborhood believe the shooting stemmed from something that happened Monday night and was gang related.

Tuesday's shooting is the sixth recorded incident since January 1, according to Memphis police.

"A stray bullet does just as much damage as a regular bullet does. So whether it's aimed at you or not, if you have to fear getting hit with one of those, you'd think twice before you go to certain places," said a neighbor.

In the wake of the shooting, neighbors are calling for action. They want more police patrols during school dismissal. They're pushing for environment court to shut down drug houses, and the District Attorney's office to combat gang activity, before a child is caught in the crossfire.

"The main channels where most of the kids have to walk to get to and from, should be safe places," said a neighbor.

No one was hurt Tuesday by any stray bullets. Police have at least one person in custody.
