Tigers Defense looks for magic of last season

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - With less than a week and a half to go until the Memphis Tigers Blue and Gray football game, players and coaches are still scrambling to catch up from practice time lost due to all that messy weather early last month.

That means less time for new Defensive Coordinator Galen Scott to implement his plan of attack on a unit that's short on experience but long on talent.

Despite losing 8 starters and several key backups to graduation, the Tigers have strong contributors coming back at linebacker in Jackson Dillon, and former Olive Branch star Wynton McManus.

Their charge is to keep building a defensive unit that was among the best in the conference last season, and helped the Tigers to a share of the league title, a bowl game victory, and a Top 25 national ranking to end the season.

"The challenge is gonna be losing those experienced players. So you gotta have young guys step up and make plays. They're not used to playing every down and every snap. And new guys coming in and leading the scheme, learning the system. Leading how to adapt to how we do things," said Scott.

"We're just all just feeling each other out. It's been a tough adjustment but were all communicating coming together on our own time trying to put things together and be that number one defense," added McManus.

The Tigers Blue and Gray Spring Game is set for next Friday night, April 10th at the Liberty Bowl.
